Refill Eden
Nestled between the Lake District fells and the Pennines in Cumbria, the beautiful Eden district is often described as the county’s hidden gem.
Refill Eden – Protecting our Rivers
Refill Eden began in our district’s largest town, Penrith, in late 2017 and is spreading out across the area, from Appleby to Alston.
Eden is much-loved by walkers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts enjoying our rivers and lakes, so the Refill scheme is the perfect way for our visitors and local people to get refreshed without resorting to disposable bottles of water.
Our Refill scheme is all the more important to us here in Eden as we have some stunning rivers and lakes in our district, which can easily carry plastic litter out into the sea, where it’s harming sea creatures and contaminating the world’s water. If fewer people are using disposable plastic bottles in our area, we hope to find fewer of them in our River Eden and other waterways, and along the shores of the beautiful Ullswater.
Refill Eden has been run by the volunteer group Penrith Action for Community Transition (PACT), with support from Cumbria County Council and our local Surfers Against Sewage team. It’s part of our wider efforts to cut down on single-use plastics and litter in Eden.
If you’re looking to start a Refill Scheme, we’ve got a guide to help you get started.
